Take a hike, lockdown is rubbish!

10 sacks of waste were collected in just one week!

Environment PR Essex…

Our Colchester-based employees have recently been busy playing their part in helping the environment thrive. We’re all passionate about the three R’s ‘reduce, reuse and recycling’, but have taken extra steps to help and improve our immediate environment.

We’ve been recharging our batteries by heading out on socially distanced lunchtime walks, in the network of footpaths around our rural office. On these fresh air-breaks, which blow away the lockdown blues, we’ve been shocked to see so much litter left on the verges, ditches and hedgerows. We all decided that we could not ignore it and needed to do something about it. As we have all taken part in beach cleans before, we searched out our litter grabbers, gloves, hi-vis jackets and sacks and sprang into action!

In just one week we collected bottles, cans, fast food packaging, wires and even windscreen wipers on our daily walks. A grand total of 10 sacks were collected for recycling! We hope the litter picks have made a positive difference to the local wildlife and fellow residents heading out on their daily walks.

Fly tipping is on the rise!

Carl Allen, Creative Director, Big Wave PR, helped organise the litter picks. He said: “We always help our clients to develop a strong and ethical corporate social responsibility plan. We’re passionate about the environment and in the office, we always recycle all paper and ink cartridges, as well as car share to meetings etc, but this time we knew that we had to help the environment right on our doorstep.”

Carl added: “We all know how bad plastic is for the oceans, but it is equally bad in the countryside. Badgers, squirrels and lots of other creatures suffer when they come into contact with plastic, glass and metals. During the lockdowns we have seen some of the best and worst aspects of human behaviour. Unfortunately, with civic amenity dumps being closed, fly tipping has been on the rise. The countryside is a vital resource for everyone, and we’ll continue our litter picks to ensure we help protect it for all.”
