Insight

A happiness and wellbeing report had been published which stated that Tilbury was the most miserable place in the UK to live. Arts and community provider, Theatreis, wanted to give the community a positive celebration to make them feel proud and confident of their heritage and future talent.

Implementation

A festival of all things Tilbury was created, celebrating the history of its docks, links to Dickens, famous faces from the region etc. A community theatre group also went into local schools to create a special play about Tilbury to be performed at the festival. The festival would also be a celebration of the people of Tilbury and would include local dance troupes, singers, pearly kings and queens, parkour performers…

A targeted PR and media campaign was devised to lift the spirits of the community and give them the confidence to take part and shine.

Impact

Over 500 people in the community took part in Totally Tilbury! At least 200 people from the community took part in a new cultural activity from African drumming to parkour.

The event was attended by Jackie Doyle-Price MP and local mayor. The press supported the campaign, which gained a very high level of coverage.

Campaign was shortlisted for a CIPR PRide Award.
