Rugby Legends Support Remembrance Travel

By: BW-Hilary

We had the honour to organise a charity rugby match and gala ball to raise much-needed funds for our client, Remembrance Travel, the travel arm of the Royal British Legion.

Thousands raised for WWII veterans.

The Remembrance Travel event was a head-to-head battle on the pitch between Legends from the world of rugby, including ex-England, Wales, Northern Ireland and South Africa, and a team of very brave fundraising amateur rugby players. The event took place at the Honourable Artillery Club (HAC) in central London and proved to be the perfect location.

The event was set-up to raise funds for WWII veterans from the Monte Cassino campaign to take them back to Italy once last time to lay old ghosts to rest. Nichola Rowlands, Head of Remembrance Travel, explains: “We have been very fortunate to receive significant LIBOR funds from the Treasury to take Normandy veterans back to pay their respects to fallen comrades. Sadly, there is no funding for us to do that for the veterans that served at Monte Cassino, which again was one of the turning points to bring an end to WWII.

“Our aim is to take our first tour of Monte Cassino veterans back to Italy in May 2018. Thanks to all of our fundraising efforts, we shall now be taking a team of veterans back with a family member and carer – I’m sure it will prove a very emotive experience for all, but will give veterans the chance to ‘lay old ghosts to rest.’”

A Gala ball…

In the evening the gala ball was hosted by BBC Breakfast sports presenter Mike Bushell who also acted as a fantastic MC and auctioneer. Here he held a question and answer session with a veteran from the Monte Cassino campaign as well as rugby legends, Colin Charvis and Paul Volley. During the evening a number of high ticket items were sold to raise funds for this fantastic cause, including international holidays, signed rugby items, bespoke Lions Tour outfits and many more objects.

Hilary Collins, MD, Big Wave PR added: “The night was a fabulous success, significant money was raised and everyone had a great time. There were no broken bones and the client is already talking about next year’s event!”
